Attraverso l'oscurità, vediamo Mobbi e i suoi uomini avvicinarsi, delle foglie sono legate ai loro cappelli per mimetizzarli.

Si buttano a pancia in giù e si fermano. Sentendo il freddo della notte nelle sue mani, Mobbi le porge senza parole, affinché i suoi subalterni vi soffino sopra dell'aria calda.

Through the darkness, we see Mobbi and his men approaching; leaves tied to their hats as camouflage.

They dive onto their stomachs and pause. Feeling the nighttime chill in his hands, Mobbi holds them out wordlessly, for his underlings to puff warm air onto them.

Il Comandante va da lui per conferire.

Nella baraccopoli, gli abitanti corrono per la piazza, chiamando Totò. L'alto pennacchio di petrolio cattura la luce, salendo verso le nuvole.

Mobbi dice al Comandante: "Andate a vedere cosa succede".

The Commander goes up to him to confer.

In the shantytown, the residents run through the town square, calling for Totò. The tall plume of oil catches the light, ascending toward the clouds.

Mobbi tells the Commander, “Go and see what’s happening.”

Il comandante si china verso l'uomo accanto a lui, il cui casco mimetico comprende alcune margherite. "Vai a vedere cosa succede".

"Io?"

"Sì”.

Con un mezzo saluto, l'uomo striscia in avanti.

The Commander leans over to the man next to him, whose helmet camouflage includes some daisies. “Go and see what's happening.”

“Me?”

“Yes.”

With a half-hearted salute, the man crawls forward.

Nella baracca della Signora, Edvige è intenta a spazzare quando Totò arriva di corsa, inseguito dai baraccati che gridano per i soldi che vogliono dalla colomba: "Milioni! Milioni!".

Edvige fa entrare Totò.

At the Signora’s shack, Edvige is busy sweeping when Totò runs up, chased by townspeople shouting for the money they want from the dove, “Millions! Millions!”.

Edvige lets Totò in.

I due sono faccia a faccia: lui tiene in mano la colomba e lei la scopa. Da terra, il ragazzino guarda Totò con uno sguardo perplesso.

I suoi inseguitori sono alla porta e gridano: "Totò, apri!" "Fammi un piacere personale!"

The two stand face to face: he holds the dove and she the broom. From the floor, the little boy regards Totò with a puzzled look.

His pursuers are at the door shouting, “Totò, open up!” “Do me a personal favor!”

Edvige si inginocchia davanti a Totò e si fa il segno della croce.

"No!" – dice Totò, allarmato – "Io non sono niente! Sono soltanto Totò”.

Edvige kneels before Totò and crosses herself.

“No!” Totò says, alarmed. ”I’m no one! I’m just Totò.”

Lei lo guarda, con gli occhi spalancati.

"È mia madre che fa tutto", spiega lui, mentre la macchina da presa si posa sul manico di scopa che lei tiene in mano.

She looks at him, wide-eyed.

“It’s my mother doing all this,” he explains, as the camera rests on the broomstick she’s holding.

Con questa ispirazione, Totò porge la colomba e Edvige si ritrova a brandire un aspirapolvere scintillante.

With that inspiration, Totò holds out the dove, and Edvige finds herself wielding a gleaming vacuum cleaner.

Ma l'elettrodomestico è ingombrante e scomodo e resiste ai suoi sforzi: non è proprio adatto a quella piccola baracca.

But the home appliance is bulky and awkward, resisting her efforts: it’s just not right for that little shack.

La spia di Mobbi non riesce a capire quello che vede nella baraccopoli: gli uomini passano consultando i loro costosi orologi da polso; le signore che indossano cappotti di pelliccia discutono su quale sia meglio: visone o ocelot.

Mobbi’s spy can’t understand what he sees in the shantytown: men stroll by consulting their expensive wristwatches; ladies wearing fur coats discuss which is best: mink or ocelot.

La Signora è vestita come una regina. Quando Totò le apre la porta, la folla fuori applaude, come il giorno in cui Totò ha lasciato l'orfanotrofio a Milano e si è unito alla folla che acclamava i ricchi che uscivano dal Teatro alla Scala.

The Signora is dressed like a queen. When Totò opens the door for her, the crowd outside applauds, as on the day when Totò left the orphanage in Milan and joined the throng cheering the rich people as they emerged from La Scala Opera House.

"Oh, che bella signora!"

"Che bel vestito!"

"Come’è elegante!

Con suo marito e suo figlio in abiti altrettanto eleganti, la signora passa davanti alla statua nella piazza.

“Oh, what a beautiful lady!”

“What a gorgeous dress!”

“So elegant!

With her husband and child in equally fancy clothes, the Signora walks past the statue in the town square.

La gente batte sulla finestra per attirare l'attenzione di Totò, mentre la spia guarda. Vediamo le margherite nel suo casco.

People bang on the window to attract Totò’s attention, as the spy watches. We see the daisies in his helmet.

Sporgendosi verso la finestra, Totò prende una margherita dal casco dell'uomo e la dà a Edvige.

Reaching through the window frame, Totò takes a daisy from the man’s helmet and gives it to Edvige.

"Cosa vuoi?" chiede Totò all'uomo.

"Fammi generale", dice, con uno sguardo folle.

Fatto! Ora ha i galloni di generale sulla manica.

“What would you like?” Totò asks the man.

“Make me a general,” he says, with a crazed look.

Done! Now he has general’s stripes on his sleeve.

Arturo si avvicina e sussurra all'orecchio di Totò.

Arturo approaches and whispers in Totò’s ear.

Guardando la statua nella piazza, Totò porge la colomba.

Gazing at the statue in the square, Totò holds out the dove.

La statua prende vita!

Mentre Arturo si precipita al suo fianco, lei allarga le braccia e salta giù dal piedistallo. "Voglio andare in città!" dice lei. Con il rossetto e i denti perfetti, balla tra gli uomini che le corrono dietro, incantati.

The statue comes alive!

As Arturo rushes to her side, she spreads her arms and leaps off the pedestal. “I want to go to town!” she says. Wearing lipstick, with perfect teeth, she dances around the men, who chase after her, entranced.

Nel frattempo, i due angeli – figure traslucide – scivolano giù dal palo. Sono venuti per quella colomba!

Meanwhile, the two angels – translucent figures – slide down the pole. They have come for that dove!

Mobbi sta per addormentarsi. Apre gli occhi per vedere la Signora, una visione in bianco, un'imperatrice che brilla nell'oscurità.

Mobbi is drifting off to sleep. He opens his eyes to see the Signora, a vision in white, an empress glowing in the darkness.

La spia sta tornando, con i gradi da generale sulla manica. Uscendo dalla baraccopoli, saluta un abitante, con grande stupore di Mobbi: "Imbecille! Ma cosa fa?"

The spy is returning, with general’s stripes on his sleeve. As he leaves the shantytown, he salutes a resident, to Mobbi’s astonishment: “Imbecile! But what are you doing?”

Proni a terra, gli agenti di sicurezza chiamano la spia: "A terra! A terra!" Sullo sfondo, ancora una volta, vediamo i palazzi di Milano e il cartello che rivendica la proprietà per Mobbi.

In risposta, l'uomo, generale nella sua mente, comanda: "In piedi!"

Ma Mobbi ordina: "Mettetelo in prigione!". Viene condotto via.

Prone on the ground, the security officers call out to the spy, “Get down! Get down!” In the background, once again, we see the buildings of Milan and the sign claiming the property for Mobbi.

In response, the man, a general in his own mind, commands, “On your feet!”

But Mobbi orders, “Put him in prison!” He’s led away.

Il comandante chiede: "Attacchiamo?"

"No. Aspettiamo l'alba. Aspettiamo la luce".

The Commander asks, “Shall we attack?”

“No. Let’s wait until dawn. Let’s wait for the light.”

Attraverso la finestra aperta, vediamo Totò ed Edvige che sorridono. La colomba è sul davanzale della finestra.

Through the open window, we see Totò and Edvige, smiling. The dove is on the window sill.

La macchina da presa fa uno zoom.

"Vuoi la luna?" – chiede lui – "Anche la luna!" Lei guarda il cielo dalla finestra, senza dire nulla. "Su!" la incoraggia lui.

Lei guarda timidamente altrove.

The camera zooms in.

“Would you like the moon?” he asks. “Even the moon!” She looks out the window at the sky, saying nothing. “Come on!” he encourages her.

She looks shyly away.

Un improvviso senso di possibilità illumina il volto di Evdige. "Non so..."

"Su!" Lui la fissa con intensità.

A sudden sense of possibility lights up Evdige’s face. “I don’t know…”

“Come on!” He stares at her with intensity.

Lei ha uno sguardo sognante negli occhi. "Scarpe", sospira.

She gets a dreamy look in her eyes. “Shoes,” she sighs.

Totò mette il piede di lei su un secchio rovesciato e all'improvviso lei si ritrova con una scarpa elegante di vernice!

Totò puts her foot on an upturned pail and suddenly she is wearing a fancy patent leather shoe!

Si guardano amorevolmente.

They gaze lovingly at each other.

Incorniciati dalla finestra, gli uomini della città stanno ancora inseguendo la statua. Ed ecco gli angeli che si dirigono verso la colomba.

Framed in the window, the men of the town are still chasing the statue. And here come the angels, heading for the dove.

Totò mette l'altro piede di Edvige sul secchio. Ma gli angeli hanno preso la colomba. La vecchia scarpa di Edvige non è cambiata.

Totò places Edvige’s other foot on the pail. But the angels have taken the dove. Edvige’s old shoe hasn’t changed.

I due si guardano con orrore.

The two look at each other in horror.

Notando che la colomba è sparita dal davanzale, guardano a destra e a sinistra, invano.

Noticing that the dove is gone from the windowsill, they look to the right and to the left, in vain.

Alla ricerca della colomba, Totò vaga nella piazza del paese dove la statua lo afferra e lo bacia appassionatamente, mentre Edvige guarda. Gli uomini implorano: "A me!"

In search of the dove, Totò wanders into the town square where the statue grabs him and kisses him passionately, as Edvige looks on. The men beg, “Me, too!”
